Our Influences

Juba do Leao’s repertoire heavily influenced by the variety of artists and groups performing the rich array of musical and dance styles of the Northeast of Brazil. As a journey through the rhythms of North-east Brazil, our set boasts an eclectic mix of Maracatu, Côco, Caboclinho, Samba Reggae and much more. Our debut album ‘Postcards From Pernambuco’ features live field recordings from the Recife streets offer a snapshot of the beats and voices of Brazil, acting as sonic memories which weave in and out of the album.

In many cases, words simply do not do justice to describe the character and tradition that each of these styles is steeped in. Below is just a small selection of some of the artists’ work that we most admire and whose sound we treasure and strive to emulate in our own fusion performance.
