These classes are open to players from all levels of experience in various styles of Afro-Brazilian music and beyond. Well done everyone for getting stuck in!

Rest in peace dear Eddie 💜

It is with a heavy heart that I share with our Carnival community the passing of ‘Captain’ Eddie Collier, Juba’s dear friend and batuqueiro who was much loved by all who played alongside him. He loved nothing more than meeting with his percussion pals all over the UK, enjoying connecting through his love for music and Carnival celebration, and so we are posting here to share the news with his far flung drumming pals.

Eddie committed a great number of years, belly laughs, energetic flatcap-clad performances, and the biggest hugs you could ever experience into our band. We will beat his alfaia drum ‘Tiger’ for many years to come in his memory. We miss you already x

Juba Jam is back! We will be running the Jams slig

Juba Jam is back! We will be running the Jams slightly differently this time, with 2 sessions over the day with a numbers limit.

SUNDAY 21ST NOVEMBER 2021

SUNDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2021

Join us for our open play-a-thons. You may be a very experienced player in this style or may never have given drumming a go before. It’s a chance for some stamina training in these super intensive and fun mass drumming sessions.

This autumn/winter we will be doing 2 Jams a day to keep numbers a little lower for the space we’re in after the past few years’ events.

Everyone, whatever their experience is welcome to attend. If you are new to this style (Maracatu Baque Virado), Holly Prest (our director) will be on hand to show the basics and members of Juba do Leão too but the premise of the session is to play for a long time and really get a feel for the music, this will involve playing the same baque (pattern) over and over again with some breaks (changes in the music).

Warning: this kind of drumming is very addictive and may lead to epic adventures and questioning life choices.

It's been one heck of a journey, but the lion still roars! Thank you to each and everyone person that's been a part of our history to now. Like everyone, it's been a rough year and a half but as a little birthday treat we'll soon be announcing the return of our JUBA JAMS. Hurrah! We're just working on some dates but we'll let you know. They'll be a little different, but if you've been looking for your alfaia fix, the time will be coming soon! Eat some cake today for us 🦁
