HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY JUBA DO LEÃO! . Fri 7th Octo HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY JUBA DO LEÃO!
.
Fri 7th October 2005
In a community hall in Manchester, I stood before a group of drummers and dancers ready to kick off our first ever Maracatu workshop, fresh back from Brazil with a pile of drums and a whole lot of enthusiasm!
.
Fast forward 15 years…
.
Our incredible performers, friends, and superfans have brought about such happiness and joy in the world. Through gigs, workshops, Juba Jams, dance sessions, weekly classes, visits from international friends, and online meet-ups, we’ve enjoyed a very special journey together with so many friends and artists along the way.
.
We’ve recorded an album, focused on dance and visual arts projects, performed at some of the most kick-ass national events alongside our peers, rinsed every tombola in the Northwest, told the story of a very special cultural tradition, and in more recent years established our youth partnership project Jubacana. We hope we’ve inspired members of our community to learn more about the background and stories of the music and dance they love.
.
Like many of our Carnival pals, we’ve really felt the loss of a packed summer of 2020 gigs. We’d usually be out in the sun (or more often, drizzle!) smiling and twirling down a parade route, doing our level best to spread intensely good vibes and inspire people to get involved. Though it may feel distant at the moment, we still do that, and we still do that together. These traditions, this art, and this sense of community have been around for hundreds of years, and all of that love, joy, and prosperity isn’t going anywhere long term. It is a time to hold fast and set sail for sunnier days.
.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who’s been part of this journey for helping me realise one of the most satisfying artistic endeavours I ever turned my hand to. I have grown as this project has grown, and that will be with me forever. To every mentor, member, ancestor, and confused-lady-with-her-shopping-bags-at-a-town-centre-gig, I salute you.
.
Love and peace. Inspiring positive change and action in our world.
 .
We’ll be back, all of us.
.

In 2020 we started a regular class in North Eastern Brazilian dance styles. Given that we’re still in Covid restrictions we’ve decided to do an online version. We’ll be premiering the video on Youtube so you can watch it directly on our channel or on our website: Link in bio to take part and set a reminder.
.
This class is perfect for anyone who’s always wanted to give Carnival dance a try, through to more experienced dancers wishing to extend their understanding of Pernambucan dance styles from the North East of Brazil…and now you can do it from the comfort of your own home.
